Linda Mama

Linda Mama is a program that targets pregnant Kenyan women who cannot afford medical insurance to cater to their maternity needs. It covers pregnancy care, delivery in the hospital, post-delivery care, and outpatient baby care. The main aim is to ensure these mothers together with their babies’ access quality healthcare services.

The Government of Kenya, through NHIF, offers this free maternity program. . Over 6 million mothers have benefitted from the program since its inception in 2016.

Linda mama is a free health insurance plan that covers the mother and infant for 1 year.

Requirements for Applying for Linda Mama

• Pregnant women above 18 years can register using the national ID card and their antenatal care records. Those with no ID cards can use their antenatal care records
• Pregnant women under the age of 18 can register using their guardian’s national ID card and their antenatal care records.

How to apply for Linda Mama

All Kenyan pregnant women are eligible for this program. There are various ways to register.

Registering via Mobile Phone

1. Dial *263# and choose the language you wish to proceed with.
2. From the pop-up menu, select NHIF Registration
3. Select Free maternity on the next menu
4. The next menu will request your identity type. Choose a Kenyan ID or Antenatal card if you don’t have the ID Card.
5. Complete your registration and you will get a membership number. Visit your nearest NHIF branch to get your card.

Registering through the NHIF Registration Portal

1. Visit NHIF website
2. Click on self-employed or employed
3. Enter your National ID
4. Fill in all the required fields
5. Attach a scanned copy of your ID.
6. Attach a passport photo
7. Click to confirm

Once you are registered, claim the cover by presenting the FMS number assigned during registration. The other method involved visiting your nearest NHIF Office or Huduma Centre.

Does Linda Mama Cover Cesarean?

Yes, NHIF has allocated the amount to cover the surgical procedure. After birth, it covers the child’s immunization.

Note that, Linda Mama is only accepted in public hospitals and a few private hospitals.

To check if your Linda Mama is Active;

SMS your ID number to 21101.  It takes 14 working days from the date of registration for Linda Mama to be active.
