Application For a Child’s Passport in Kenya

International travels require you to have a passport. Also, traveling with kids will require you to apply for their passports. Obtaining a passport in Kenya is straightforward when you have all the required documents. Getting a passport for your children as a single parent may not be as difficult as you think. You need to prove your sole custody or have the other parent’s consent to apply for the child’s passport.

If the other parent refuses to give consent, you can consult a lawyer for advice.

How to Apply for a Passport in Kenya

  1. Register on www.ecitizen.go.ke
  2. Go to Department of Immigration Services (Click on new if applying for the first time and old if it is not the first time) and click on the passport application form
  3. Select the passport owner; if it is your application or your child’s application. The child should be below 18 years.
  4. Go through the instructions carefully and complete the application form. Note that applications done on behalf of others will be rejected. You must use your own ecitizen account.
  5. Select on citizen ship and the passport type required (passport types can be ordinary or diplomatic)
  6. Fill all the required personal information and select the mode of payment and make payments.
  7. Download and print the application form and three application receipts
  8. Submit the application forms in person to the selected immigration office (Nyayo House, Kisumu, Mombasa, Meru, Eldoret, Nakuru, Kisii)

Passport Fees in Kenya

You can pay for a passport application via Mobile money, Debit or Credit cards, and Online banking from local Kenyan banks. It takes at least 15 working days to get your passport once you physically submit your required documents at the immigration offices. It can take longer if additional information is required.

Application of a Minor Kenyan Passport

When applying for a child’s passport in Kenya, you will need the following;

  1. Register on ecitizen (your own account, a minor cannot have their own account but will use their parent’s account)
  2. Ecitizen pre-filled passport application form and payment receipts
  3. Original and copies of Kenyan National ID of the child’s parents or death certificate if deceased
  4. Original and copy of child’s birth certificate
  5. Both parent’s passports
  6. Copies of the Father’s/ Mother’s Kenyan Birth Certificate
  7. Signed parental consent form
  8. Recommender’s ID copy. More often the recommender is usually a church leader or a lawyer.
  9. Three recent passport size photos on a white background (2 * 2 inches). Note that; the photo should be taken without earrings, spectacles, and both ears should be visible.
  10. Applicant must appear in person for digital phot capture. Remember to dress your child well on this day. You can carry extra clothes just in case your child soils themselves.
  11. For lost cases, a sworn affidavit and police abstract
  12. An explanation letter for lost and mutilated cases.

After submission, you will be issued with a confirmation slip that you will have to bring along during collection. Remember, no one is allowed to pick your passport for you, unless they have a written permission, the confirmation slip and original IDs.

How to get a Child’s Passport with one parent absent in Kenya

If you are getting a passport for child whose parent is not available, the parent must give their consent.

In most cases, one parent cannot get a child’s passport without the consent of the other parent. One exemption is when you have sole custody of your child.
